Kajiado Governor Joseph ole Lenku has castigated Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli’s way of handling cross-border issues.

He said the East African leader’s way of handling livestock which cross into the country for pasture amid biting drought in Kajiado is “shameful”.

“This is indeed shameful for a leader of his stature to auction our livestock and yet we have hundreds of Tanzanian livestock grazing in our country.”

“Why is he creating a wedge between our Maasai communities living in Tanzania and Kenya?” Lenku asked during an interview at his office on Tuesday.

Lenku said that while Kenya has continued to preach peace among the people living along the border, Magufuli is “busy demolishing bridges for unknown gains”.

This was after Magufuli on Tuesday emphasised that his government will confiscate all livestock trespassing into the country from Kenya.

During a tour of Kagera province, he said: “Tanzania is not a livestock farm…we will take stern legal action for animals that cross into our country.”

At the same time, the president advised a neigbouring country, which he did not name, to confiscate Tanzanian livestock that crosses into its territory illegally.

“We have decided to confiscate and take legal action against farmers whose livestock will trespass into our country,” Magufuli said in a public rally.

The Tanzanian president’s sentiments came in the wake of accusations that he has been frustrating Kenyan herders who cross over to graze their animals during drought.

Three week ago, The Star reported an incident in Arusha where Tanzanian authorities confiscated 1,305 heads of cattle and arrested ten Kenyans.

The arrested animals were auctioned before the herders were released by a court in Arusha after paying a TSh1 million fine each.

The lot was charged for being in the country without valid documents.

Lekarokia ole Nangoro, a Kenyan respected elder from Loitokitok, told the Star on Tuesday he was in Arusha when the ten Kenyans were released.

“All of them are back into the country safe. As we speak now, I am organising a fundraiser to pay off the money we were loaned to pay the court in Tanzania.”

Nangoro spoke on telephone from Tarakea border town in Loitokitok.

The proceeds from the public auction of the cows belonging to the Ilkisonko Maasai from Kajiado South constituency were handed over to the Tanzanian government.

The Kenyan herders had been given an option fine of a Tsh500 million by the Arusha court but failed to raise the money and the livestock were auctioned.

One week ago, Tanzanian authorities at the Namanga border confiscated 6,400 one day-old chicken chicks valued at Tsh12 million on allegations they had bird flu.

All the chicks were burned alive in the presence of Tanzanian police.

The owner of the chicks, a Tanzanian, was arrested and detained by authorities, according to Mwananchi Newspaper.

While speaking in Kagera, Magufuli instructed all the elected leaders to educate their electorates on the need to brand all their livestock.

,

East African community at its prime

Mwathani nikii uyu

Inferiority complex at play, but they have a point, the Kenya maa community should not graze their cattle across the border, the same should apply to the maa community in TZ.

Ole lenku statement really did hurt, he should give magufool more

president bombardier mchomakuku

Magufuli is going ham on Kenyan Maasai and their livestock, Museveni is going ham on Luos in Lake Victoria but hey, we have bigger problems in electing a president forever.

who is that PYT next to Lenku dressed in white??:):):):)

Enyewe if that’s the way they want to play it they have a right to do so…the Tanzanian Maa should also stop coming over to our side.

you have a valid point but I like to differ we have the EAC which champions for brotherhood n sharing across the east africa. In Tz we have maa like wise in ken, we cant live in selfishness and prejudice
magufuli anafaa ambiwe hiyo ardhi sio mamake.

Why is everyone catching a feel? It’s TANZANIA! Not Kenya. There are territorial interests that need to be respected.

Now that it has happened, Kenyan Maasai should use that as a lesson and not walk their cattle there.

Their country their rules. Leave it be.

Watanzania wamejaa hapa… Hamna anayewauliza… Wafukuzwe !!!

True Man

Alive!!!

hata hawa maasai Wa Kenya waache ujinga Wa kugraze ng’ombe zao kwa mashamba za watu

This is the same problem afflicting Laikipia county. The Maa speakers graze the cattle on anyone’s land by force. Its sad and unacceptable

Who said all of Nairobi was Maasai ancestral land??? Kasarani, Dagoretti and Westlands were in Central Kenya.Dagoretti to this day still resembles Kiambu to some sort .Nairobi Maasai land applies to places like Langata, the Park and the CBD maybe.

You should read about Agikuyu expansion. Majority of central was occupied by Maasai and dorobo prior to the expansion of the Agikuyu southwards from Mt. Kenya.

Nope.
In the case of the Athi and Gumba, Yes, they lived in the forested parts of Central Kenya east of the Aberdares(Not West of it).The Maasai, however, did not. Unless you are talking about Nyandarua and even there, it was on the edges of the present day county, close to Nakuru.Places like Kinangop ,Kipiripiri were unhabited forestland, same to Kijabe in Kiambu. These areas only became agricultural land with European settlement.Places like Ol Kalou were actually used by the Maasai from time to time, but were not considered part of Maasailand as it was only in times of drought that the Maasai went that high up
Kikuyus did not expand from anywhere near Mount Kenya.Kikuyus expanded from Muranga, which is not very close to Mount Kenya.Mount Kenya is in Nyeri and Kirinyaga.
What is today Westlands was owned by the Athi who later either married Kikuyus or sold their land to them. Most Kiambu residents have Maasai(due to mass displacement during the Maasai clan wars.Thi salso applies to Nyeri Kikuyus who many have Uasin Gishu Clan Maasai ancestors) and Athi blood, thus are the inheritors of the lands the Athi occupied, be it in Kiambu,Nairobi and Upper Muranga.
What is today Dagoretti has always been Kikuyuland with no Athi settlements there. It is part of the Kikuyu region that stretches from Gatanga, along the Aberdares to Lari.
Waiyaki wa Hinga was from Dagoretti, remember him?
Places like Ruiru,Kahawa and Kasarani were temporarily inhabited by the Kikuyu until the smallpox epidemic of the 1870s which led to the area being emptied of people. That is why the British claimed the land was ‘empty’ although by the 1900s, the Kikuyu were returning to the area.
The only place I know of that Kikuyus displaced Maasai in the pre colonial era was in present day Nyahururu and Subukia, both in the Rift Valley, not Central Kenya.

issorait. Gwitu ni lari

So you are one of the Gumbas from Lari?
