Mrs.Eunice Muringo Kiereini was born in 1939 in Kerugoya.She was the first indigenous Kenyan to qualify as a nursing trainer/tutor which was the preserve of British and other expatriate nursing officers until 1970s.Together with Margaret Koinange(who preceded her)they belonged to the first generation of African SRN(State Registered Nurse)diploma holders who were all trained abroad.Only certificate(enrolled)nurses were trained locally by British bosses.After attending Loreto Girls High School she left to train as a registered nurse at Southampton Hospital Medical School in England and Simpson Maternity Hospital in Edinburgh,Scotland for an ADM(Advanced Diploma in Midwifery).She returned home in the early 1960s and worked briefly at King George V1(today KNH)Hospital.She was also the official nursing officer assigned to monitor President Kenyatta’s health in conjunction with his personal physician.She left shortly afterwards for BSc degree in medical nursing at Wellington University New Zealand.When she returned she was appointed the Chief Nursing Officer.She was the founder of Kenya Nurses Association and the School of Advanced Nursing,University of Nairobi in 1968 which produced the first batch of locally trained nurse tutors in MTCs,African hospital matrons and District/Provincial Nursing Officers.She was the first African President of International Union of Nurses and sits in the board of many health NGOs and facilities.She was also a nursing consultant at the local WHO office.She is the second wife of former head of civil service Jeremiah Kiereini and sibling to literary giant Micere Mugo,cousins with Ambassador Robinson Githae.

Formed by Samba Mapangala in Nairobi in 1981 after the breakup of Les Kinois. They are named after the dormant volcano in the Ruwenzori range of Eastern Congo, the third highest peak in Africa. Samba was on the verge of going back to Kinshasa to start a new band when he teamed up with some ex-Bana Ngenge musicians in Nairobi to make a record and it turned out to be the smash hit “Malako.” Four songs from their golden age can be heard on VIRUNGA ROOTS VOLUME 1, including “Africa Dance,” “Ntumba,” “L’Argent” and “Losako”
