In 1968,Jomo made a decree which was officially known as the Trade Licensing Act or Kenyanisation of commercial life in the country. This policy targeted non Africans especially Kenyan Asians.Mwai Kibaki was in charge of the ministry that propagated this agenda. It caused a rift in cabinet between Tom Mboya and Jomo.
Cynics viewed the move as a racist gesture but Jomo’s supporters in government thought it was a good response to the potent symbol of African subordination in colonial society and Asian control of businesses. Thousands of Asians started fleeing Kenya for Britain because the new law prevented them from making a living. At the time there were hundreds of thousands of Asians living in Kenya, partly the historical backbone of the construction of the railway networks in the country.
Now if you think Donald Trump has draconian laws, shift your focus back to 1960s Kenya and the Kenyanisation policy which was copied and pasted by Idi Amin a few years later in Uganda.
