On a day like yesterday in 1967,The Socialist Revolutionary Ché Guevara was captured, tied up and executed by US-trained Bolivian soldiers in a CIA operation. Following the execution, his hands were cut off, his personal items were taken as trophies and his body was dumped in a mass grave.
To the US, Che’s death was critical because the US believed his death would ensure that the example of the Cuban revolution would not inspire other revolutionary movements across the World.
The US and Bolivia lied about the execution claiming Ché was killed in battle. However, almost immediately press reports appeared reporting that he had been executed “in cold blood”. The kill team originally planned to cut off Che’s head as a trophy.
After parading his body in front of the media, the Bolivians secretly buried his body where they hoped it would never be found. For 30 years his remains were missing, but in July 1997, his bones were located on the outskirts of Villegrande, Bolivia.
The CIA had tried to follow Che ever since 1954, and in 1962, had used Chicago mobster Johnny Rosselli to try to poison Che in Cuba. The operation to track down Che was supervised by sixteen US Green Berets.
Che’s flashlight along with other personal items are on display at CIA’s Headquarters.
Twenty of the top twenty-three Bolivian military men heading Bolivia’s US-supported dictatorship at the time of Che’s execution were trained at the US School of the Americas.
Guevara wrote his own epitaph, stating: “Wherever death may surprise us, let it be welcome, provided that this our battle cry may have reached some receptive ear and another hand may be extended to wield our Weapons.”
The US used Klaus Barbie, the Nazi named the Butcher of Leon, to help capture and execute Che.
My Understanding from Accounts I read years ago, was that the CIA wanted to take him for interrogation but the Bolivians really wanted him dead. CIA was present and decided not to intervene in the execution.
