Frustration over the slow vaccine rollout and a prolonged lockdown have fueled efforts to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Christina Bellantoni, director of the USC Annenberg Media Center, said that in some parts of L.A., support for the recall is evident.
“You see a lot of it in [yard] signs, the lack of confidence” in the governor, she said.
Nevertheless, as recently as December, Newsom’s ratings were good.
“In October, [the Public Policy Institute of California] had him at 58%,” said Zach Courser, a professor of government at Claremont McKenna College. “In December, measuring him on jobs and economic performance, still 58%. Over half of independents [said] they approved of Newsom.”
The recall campaign has until March to submit enough signatures to get on the ballot. Newsom’s term, his first as governor, ends in 2023.
You were blaming everything on Trump. Even when your liberal governors, town mayors and legislators failed concerning covid or homelessness you blamed it on Trump.

Newsome’s problems are not tied to the party. They are personal ineffectiveness:
The questions over Newsom’s performance as governor go deeper than disorganization, right? They’re about money. Talk about the latest state budget that Newsom drew up.
Essentially, there is no new direct public health money for counties in the budget.
Even though a pandemic is raging.
Counties have their hands up, begging for anything, and the governor has said essentially no. I’ve asked them specifically: Is public health not a big enough priority? Why do counties not get any more public health money and meanwhile, you have continued to ladle increasing amounts of responsibility on them—contact tracing, testing, enforcement of the rules, and now vaccination?
It seems to me like Newsom has a couple of problems. He’s got this problem of optics—what it looks like he’s doing and maybe not doing. And then he’s got the problem of what is actually happening that is touching people. I remember back in November it seemed like some anti-Newsom sentiment picked up after he was caught going to this fancy dinner without a mask. Did you see that as a turning point?
Certainly, that was a turning point. Gov. Newsom was at the French Laundry, a hip, very upscale, trendy restaurant in wine country in California.
He was with donors, right?
He was schmoozing with donors—lobbyists. It just looked really bad on him. And he was violating his own rules. He was dining with a group of friends that were not from his household. He defended himself at first and then a little while later he apologized. Voters are extremely upset about this. I’ve heard it everywhere. I’ve heard it from Republicans. I’ve heard it from independents. I’ve heard it from Democrats.
It’s optics, but it’s even deeper than that. Everybody has sacrificed so much. We’ve been, by and large, locked in our houses for the better part of a year. And to see the governor flippantly ignoring his own rules hit a nerve.
California used to own the skilled manucafuring side. Making circuit boards, electrical component assembly etc. all those went to China. The opportunity to make decent money has reduced.

Texas is pretty much flipped. Ted Cruz is on his way out. The Hispanic kids who were 14 will be 18 in his next election. Nobody wants him in Texas. And in places like SanAntonio, Latino are now the majority. In Houston, Latino and Black are now the majority.

Ted Cruz came under intense scrutiny for questioning the election results and in particular his objections to the results in Arizona. Days before that January 6th vote Cruz announced his plans to object to electors from several states and talked up how “the allegations of fraud and irregularities in the 2020 election exceed any in our lifetimes.” In recent weeks, even some other Republicans have been calling out Cruz and Josh Hawley and saying they should step up to say clearly and without qualification the election wasn’t stolen despite baseless claims from the former president and his allies.
In an episode of the podcast Verdict with Ted Cruz last week, the senator continued to mock the media because “their talking point is ‘there is no voter fraud.'”
But while continuing to defend his own actions, in comments that got some attention this week, Cruz criticized former President Donald Trump for his rhetoric about the election.
Cruz said, “President Trump’s rhetoric I think went way too far over the line. I think it was both reckless and irresponsible because he said repeatedly, he said over and over, he won by a landslide, there was massive fraud, it was all stolen everywhere.”
“That evidence — the campaign did not prove that in any court, and to make a determination about an election it has to be based on the evidence,” Cruz said. “And so simply saying the result you want — that’s not responsible.”
