The River of Piss

So today I found myself down past Thika along Garissa road. I decided to visit The world famous Fourteen Falls. I was surprised to discover I was still in Kiambu County at the gate to the park as I had assumed I was in Machakos county. After paying 160 kshs at the gate I drove in and could not help noticing the pungent smell of urine in the air. At first I thought it was the public toilets near the gate, but as I walked towards the river it became clear where the smell was emanating from. The water was slothy and green as it cascaded downstream. At the base of the waterfalls, the water disappeared into a frothy foam. One hustler approached and offered to take me on 'adventure' by crossing the piss-stream barefoot! So here is where all of the sewage in Nairobi ends up. And to imagine we have Nema and other organisations purporting to be fighting environmental degradation. 0f3e8f47-5c6a-424c-9b60-cf3b7e5bd7cb.jpg 57f1f38f-fb44-4a3e-b49d-4993ba21bd50.jpg cdf3c5ad-770c-4100-b588-5368dbc3ec03.jpg 2136e6e6-3d8e-4b2b-afa8-c7575b599ae3.jpg

Actually it is mine that is really off kilter. I have all along assumed the fourteen falls was on river Thika/Chania. I now see from the maps that the two rivers get real close to each other before the Athi takes a south easterly course on its way to indian ocean as the other turns north and east to the Tana.
My assumption therefore lead me to believe that any pollution would be from Thika and not Nairobi. Pole, pass me that knife and fork I eat humble pie.

nilienda hapo 2014/15 hapo. made the cross on foot. pretty dope! can't remember if there smell of urine was there.
In the rainy season, I believe the smell is less or non existent, but in this dry season probably half of the liquid is raw sewage.
