I have a Samsung smart TV, can I download Kodi on it and will it play straight from the TV?

nope! The smart Tv has to be pre-installed with kodi during manufacture and currently none is.
Sorry you still have to buy the Android Mbox.

@Jazzman @Electronics4u saw some guy using modbro on his crib via hdmi from his phone, and he has a box that changes the channells via a remote. Nichanueni hiyo ni box gani.
