On this day, 53 years ago,a new wave of violence hit Zanzibar as hundreds of Arabs were arrested by the Government.

Around 450 former members of Sultan’s Zanzibar National Party were arrested and locked up in different prisons after questioning.

This was after Zanzibar’s revolutionary leaders claimed that they had discovered a plot to overthrow the Government of President Sheikh Abeid Karume by Arabs.
