Today in History

On this day,43 years ago, the ruling junta in Ethiopia, said Haile Selassie who was under military detention, had offered to surrender his wealth held in Swiss accounts in exchange for his life.

This was after 60 former officials of his government, including his grandchild were executed by the military.

Haile Selassie’s money in Swiss Bank accounts was estimated at $15 billion.

Switzerland banking authorities, however, warned that getting the ousted Emperor’s wealth was not going to be a walk in the park, even if the new government had written permission from him.

According to Swiss banks, any authority to turn the money over to anyone, required proof that it was given under “full freedom of decision”.
