UNHCR -72000 Somali refugees have returned voluntarily to Somali since Kakuma refugee camp closure

I’m glad Jubilee government closed this camp that’s simply a gravy train for NGOs and activists to mint money at the expense of refugees. After hosting them for 27 years, closure is long overdue. At this rate they camp will be empty by 2022.

NAIROBI (Xinhua) – The UN refugee agency said Tuesday it has voluntarily repatriated some 72,000 Somali refugees from Kenya since the return exercise began in December 2014.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said a total of 70,202 Somalis from Dadaab refugee camp in northeast Kenya, and 1,899 others from Kakuma refugee camp in northwest regions and Nairobi, were assisted in the framework of voluntary return to Somalia since the launch of voluntary repatriation on December 8, 2014.

“Currently there are 17,478 registered refugees willing to return to Somalia,” the refugee agency said in its bi-weekly update released in Nairobi.

During Aug. 16-31, some 1,337 refugees were supported to return to their homes in Somalia by flight to the capital city Mogadishu and southern port city of Kismayu.

However, the UN refugee agency said the Return Help Desks were witnessing a reduced number of persons seeking repatriation mainly due to the road movement being put on hold and return to Baidoa is suspended until further notice.

An estimated two million Somalis have been displaced in one of the world’s most protracted humanitarian crises that have now entered its third decade.

An estimated 1.1 million people are internally displaced within Somalia and nearly 900,000 are refugees in the region.

Experts say continuing political and security stabilization progress in Somalia, along with growing pressures in hosting countries, makes this a critical moment to renew efforts to find durable solutions for Somali refugees.

72,000 is a good number… the other refugees itabidi waende tu

The UN redirected most of its aid resources to Syria & the Arab World.

The Govt. of Kenya can not afford to fund Daadab & Kakuma refugee camps & thus orders their closure under the guise of IT IS LONG OVERDUE.

Hosting refugees isn’t easy or cheap, just look at how Europe is struggling with migrant & refugee crisis.

The closure was announced in August 2013, the UN protested even the UN SG sent his emissary to President Uhuru to reconsider. It was agreed its closure would suspended for a year as UN prepares voluntary returns and inform OP of progress. In 2014 nothing had been done and the closure was now re-announced. President Uhuru and UN SG meet at UNGA in New York and finally the repatriation of refugees was agreed. Gok doesn’t spend a cent on Kakuma, we even get paid reimbursement for providing security for the camp. Let them go back to build their nation in the safe zones.

I want they to do 90k-100k this year and the same next year. Once the camp is half empty then it wouldnt take more than 2 years to close it completely. So far the UN has spent $100 billion alone on Kakuma camp in 27 years something that is bringing a lot of friction in UN HQ. That would be enough to convert Somali to a developed nation. Watu wamekula sana.

waaaahh… yeah its a lot coz ata S. Sudan walipewa pesa mob akina Machar & Kiir wakakuwa shiny eyes!!!
