Cash transacted via mobile phones hit Sh3.7 trillion in the 12 months through March.
This was helped by rising uptake of mobile loans, amidst concern that a lot of the advances go into the fast-growing gambling industry.
Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) numbers indicate the volumes transacted between April 2017 and March 2018 increased by Sh219 billion from Sh3.48 trillion in a similar period a year earlier.
Upswing in mobile commerce, including growing popularity of easily accessible but relatively expensive mobile loans, has in recent years driven growth in mobile payments.
The CBK does not break down the share by mobile operators but Safaricom’s M-Pesa controls more than three quarters of the transactions.

Safaricom shares will rise.

That company needs to split. It’s too big

The largest shareholder is vodacom (a UK company), with 40% stake!!!Let that sink in. 40% of dividends is shipped to the UK. Coloniàlists did not leave. Capitalistic nations like Kenya sometimes makes them vulnerable to outsiders. We need restricted capitalism like China to prevent exploitation by financially superior foreigners.

International economic law limits the powers of poorer states when it comes to protection of local markets

Why!? Google and quite many others are even bigger

safaricom and eabl have never been Kenyan companies.

Before Vodacom came on board in 2000, what was Safaricom?
100% sure it would have ended up like a typical Kenyan government owned company.

Before safcom there was telkom or is it posta or whatever name they use to call it,18 years down the line it’s still playing catch up to it’s competitors

and that is why they are doing good

Je Citizen ni ya Mkenya?

macharia ni meffi in my eyes

Lakini is it a local company doing well?

yes vodacom owns 40% but GOK owns 35% +taxes therefore GOK is the biggest beneficiary of safaricom
