we were told about these thugs "Uhuruto" back in 2009

The political sharks, who bathed in money in 1992 and made life unbearable for majority of us by driving up inflation, are back. This time, they say they want to liberate us from the mess they created. Former Chairman of the Youth for Kanu (YK) 92 Cyrus Jirongo and his sidekick, Agriculture Minister William Ruto, say this time they will not relent until their mission is accomplished.

Jointly, they refer to themselves as “young generation” and together with Finance Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, have crafted a new political alliance to deliver us from the yoke of “old men”. This was the crowd that cut the cords of political and financial propriety of our electoral system in 1992 and hacked away at the best interests of our nation. Now, we are looking into the abyss and they are back again posturing as “saviours”.

I was a boy in 1992, but I still remember Jirongo, a bad-mannered, giggly young man, running around the country donning a brown leather jacket and throwing out wads of Sh500 notes into any crowd that yelled Kanu. Little wonder that the Sh500 note was pejoratively referred to as Jirongo.

Ruto has tried different formations to fit in with the ordinary Kenyan. Ruto likes passing himself as a son of a peasant who used to earn a living by selling chicken in some remote village near Eldoret.
I don’t know where Uhuru was when this group was learning the art of political wheeler-dealing, but my point is that the “young” political sharks who now want to liberate us from the “old men” were small and insignificant in 1992 before they made a kill.
Personally, I haven’t forgiven their actions that led to inflation, which drove up the price of basic commodities.
Before YK 92’s money blitz, we used to buy a loaf of bread for Sh7. By the time Jirongo and co were through with their money spluttering antics, it had more than doubled.
The effect was bad and families like mine were hard hit. Our bread rations reduced from three slices every morning to one and a half because my mother, a primary school teacher, could not afford to buy two loaves as she had previously done.
I can’t quite remember what happened next, but I know that people from humble backgrounds like Ruto and Jirongo got immensely wealthy in 1992.
Some of these people have never been brought to account for how they acquired mysterious and evidently vast wealth.
I am pro-change, but to be honest, I don’t think these people have anything new to offer. The fact that proponents of the YK 92 movement stand a chance of being elected president is an indictment of our corroded political system.
In fact, for us to be safe as a nation, they should not be anywhere near power.
I’m slowly giving up on the idea that we could land a miracle Obama in Kenya before the 2012 elections. But I still believe Kenyans disappointed by the current elite should be actively vetting potential presidential candidates. The consequences of choosing a wrong candidate again will be too much to bear.
