What happens in case of a road accident?

This sounds rather silly but all those years of driving I have never got into a serious accident. Minor scrapes here and these settled amicable. Only one time I hit someone from behind. Their insurance got me to pay for it. Something like 30K. I was surprised by a lawyer delivering a demand notice one afternoon while at the office. Those were the days life was tough and we had third party insurance.

A relative driving a GK vehicle hit and killed a motorcyclist. He is out on bail but I would like to know what happens next,

  1. Does Govt insure its vehicles?
  2. If so will they take up the case on his behalf?

In a civilian case, when does insurance come in? For the careless driving charge or only for the claim in tort by the third party? If you are charged with say careless driving and found guilty, does comprehensive cover pay for your fine or they only carters for compensation to the third party and that only if there is a claim by them against you directly?

These things look simple but for those who have never been through them, they are very complicated. Someone with knowledge to tutor me please!

I have always wondered about this too

This Topic is on Point… I hope we have an insuarance guy here to explain to us.
I’ld like to know more about insuarance claims such as Side mirror kungolewa una eza claim etc

i am no insurance guy but based on my limited knowledge…

Government vehicles are never insured, if they hit you then you have to wait for government vehicle check unit guys to investigate then you follow up with the transport officer directly responsible for the ministry of department that owns the vehicle (its normally a pain)

i have never seen anyone claiming fines charged because of a traffic offence, this would open up the insurance companies to serious amounts of cash leakage. infact traffic violations and careless driving can cause your premium to be adjusted upwards if the insurance company finds out.

in the event of an accident or theft, the insurance companies will deduct some excesses before paying you or paying for repairs and this varies from one insurance company to the other, however if you have an excess protector on top of your premium (either 0.25% or 1% of cars value), you dont pay any excesses at all and any claims are settled in full

yes you can, insurance covers you from partial theft, however the buggers hide a clause under Motor private Excesses that says they will deduct a certain percentage of the actual value of partial theft, e.g “own damage/partial theft :2.5% of value, minimum 15k maximum 100k” so you might end up receiving nothing, unless an excess protector as i mentioned in my previous post

Yaani tayari umegongesha bmw? Venye she is here is still fresh in our minds

some government vehicles are insured, like those leased by the national police service and ntsa…but departmental haziko insured

@Afro unahitajika hapa.

Ha ha ha, boss, hiyo BMW naiendesha nikiwa sober 50km/h unless the stretch is clear and I can see 200m away, only then do I floor it up towards 250km/h:D:D Iko safe and sound in the garage.

I thought you cant claim a dime from insurance without a police report/OB/Abstract? Then you also cant claim if you dont report within 24hrs? If you have excess protector then claim but…“you will looses the non claim discount for the next three or so years”! Therefore do your math first!

There are so many things to know about insurance. Someone needs to write a small book. But then again maybe lawyers and insurers take advantage of our ingorance…

If you have been enjoying an NCD No claims Discount the next time you renew the privilege will be withdrawn for at-least one claim-free year

You cannot claim for a side mirror because the cost would be less than 30% of the value of the vehicle. For insurance to come in, the damage must be more than 30% of your cars value, that is why they will always tend to overvalue your vehicle

hmm really, what I know is that if the value of the stolen part is less than the excess, 30%, they will not pay for it
