First do a search (you register e-citizen and do the search)
Check chassis no…engine number etc
Avoid duplicate log book…the industry has loads of crooks now a days…uneza uziwa gari ya wizi easily (even the ones at car bazaars)…they steal cars and embed fake chase numbers…
To counter this you will need to lift the area above the wiper to check whether there are modifications/tempering done from the inside…if in doubt better insist and take it for lifting/inspection at industrial area even if at your cost

Do a sale agreement and dont pay in full (installment payment is a better option)
Its then wise to transfer it to your names

Mechanic na sio wale machokoraa hupewa kazi ya kubadilisha mguu ya gari. An experienced qualified mechanic. Ni wachache and they don’t come cheap

…uneven tyre wear could be a sign of poor repair work chassis alignment after a major accident.

…avoid cars with brand new tyres. They conceal a lot of vital info on vehicle condition.

…check for engine/ gearbox leaks and general condition of under carriage. Kama ime bondwa bondwa ujue imepitia makuu.

…check body for repair work/ filler and have a qualified mech check for signs of welding ujue kama imewekwa nose cut.

Generally telltale signs of abuse.

What’s the issue with full payment?

In case umecheswo you have a fall-back. However, not many sellers will agree to this. A compromise is to pay via bankers cheque and hope that before the cheque clears you will have had time to detect any anomalies. Recall that the CBK recommends RTGS and/or EFT for amounts more than 1m.

You can split the bankers cheque amounts if it’s over 1m

Pale place ya oil open the cap and check it. If it has whitish or milky spots that is a sign of a blown gasket

NTSA: Vehicle Search

This enables you to search the details of vehicle, using either registration number or the chassis number

http://usafiri1.ntsa.go.ke/login_csp.jsp

they steal cars and embed fake chase numbers

emphasis was on the chase word . common in the roadside mechanic world:D
