What is the definition of 'marginalized communities' in Kenya?

Everybody claims to be marginalized. Ukambani, Coast, NEP, Luo Nyanza, Tana River etc. Not to minimize the issue, but what is the criteria used to say a place is marginalized?

A marginalized community is a group that’s confined to the lower or peripheral edge of the society. Such a group is denied involvement in mainstream economic, political, cultural and social activities. Marginalization or social exclusion deprives a group of its rightful share of reach to productive resources and ways to utilize its maximum potential for prosperity. It’s directed at groups who are seen to differ from perceived norms.

Marginalization can affect a community at the macro-level, where its members may lack access to affordable formal education, equal employment or gender-related opportunities. At this level, victims are denied influence or access to the official power structure and can’t participate in decision-making processes. At the micro-level, exclusion is manifested in income discrepancies, occupational status, and social networking around race, religion or gender.

Social exclusion leads to subordination of one section of the society as another exercises economic, social and political dominance. Affected groups are usually socially illiterate, uneducated and reliant on others. They’re poor and lack basic necessities of life, including access to good healthcare. Marginalized groups include the poor, working children, gender inequality, the disabled and persons speaking a minority language.

Here’s another description according to the National Gender and Equality Commission in Kenya.

IMO, they are Communities that have been historically left out of mainstream economic activities because of one reason or another. These reasons range from cultural to political.

In my opinion, the definition of “marginalized communities” in Kenya has morphed into a ‘political unit that wants to attain special consideration and access to political power.’ If the Luo, the 4th largest community in Kenya, can claim to be marginalized, then the term has lost all conventional meaning.

They’ve made it that if you don’t get presidency and most influence in govt, despite some representation and economic/developmental benefits, then you’re marginalized.

In current real life it seems to make very little factual sense to me on many grounds . The only time i feel there would have been true marginalization was in colonial times or when there was segregation . It’s only use in Kenya is when there are political grounds to be made , nothing else . It’s a capitalistic world , you simply don’t get things for the sake of it , you earn them .

There’s very little logic , if any , to the word ‘marginalization’ in Kenya .

NEP ndio I understand but hao wengine ndio sielewi. For example how is Mombasa marginalized?

Previously marginalised communities were societies which were on the fringes of mainstream society, held back by culture practices or remoteness of location, generally ignored by government and no effort made to include them in national participation.

We have devolution, marginalisation has changed, and these are communities who elect leaders who disregard duty to the community. These communities have leaders who deliberately barricade their communities from developmental participation and engagement for the sake of maintaining dominance, power and control.

Am sureif you where to live the lives of the marginalized societies for a day.

You would all agree. Am sure your reference is the media local wekend documentaries on them.

umeenda Mombasa na ukaishi huko?

Some Luos claim they are marginalized…baba has time and again denied the chance at the table.

Baba may claim to be marginalized, but he was charitable enough to open and empty Paybill # 673673, the Orange Relief Fund, for famine relief in the Northern areas.

In typical style, he has never accounted for the proceeds.
