Why is it that most of our major highways are dotted with buildings mostly residential areas just close to the highway?
Take for example Thika road where you have many residential estates built close to the roads which causes people to cross the roads anywhere anyhow along the course of the road.
Does it mean in the future we might need almost 200 footbridges or bumps everywhere to satisfy the needs of every pedestrian crossing the roads? Because this issue is replicated and almost everywhere, in Rironi road now under construction, Western bypass most areas of Nairobi and Mombasa city etc
In Western and Asian nations this issue seems not to be present . Whats missing here kwa Kenya?

Most of these buildings were constructed before the highway was built and therefore were very far off the road.

But I have seen many other new buildings mainly residential cropping up along the course of the highway…
Living next to a road is a health disaster coz of inhaling all those vehicle fumes containing lead, sulphur, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, soot etc. Leads to cancer in adults and reduced brain development in children.
Perhaps they were bough before then… of course it is stupid to build residential units too close to the highways…
Kenya and Africa generally needs to reduce its birth rates. There are people everywhere especially in Eastlands.
I believe it’s poor planning basically no wonder pia Nairobi ime develop kuwa a ghetto city. Kuna kitu inaitwa gridlock system( engineers in the village can correct me if wrong) that enables proper planning

i would say it’s those in power ignoring the professionals. (who are somehow put there by the people)
Nairobi was designed in the 70s and for a period of 30 years (if am not wrong). so am sure in the late 90s early 2000s, new plans were set aside for the upgrade of Nairobi, but am sure the plans were used to light fires, in the toilets or collecting dust somewhere. even new plans not only for Nairobi but for Kenya are somewhere collecting dust.
but relax, it’s a world thing for politicians to ignore experts until it’s too late. (even movies depict the scientists being ignored at the start of disasters only to be consulted when things turn for the worse.)
If bonobos are given a chance, they can build a building or start selling merchandise in the middle of the highway.
In other countries roads are constructed to improve transportation and standards of living. In Kenya roads are constructed to help the leaders steal and to be used in PR

You are totally wrong. Much of Kenya is scarcely populated. Go to the Northern part of the country, Coast, NEP, Upper eastern and you will recant your statement immediately

Nairobi was initially designed for less than 1 million people. Some reports say it was meant for a maximum of half a million. Today we are over 3 million strong.
The city was doing ok until late 80’s and early 90’s when Moi rule began becoming unpopular.
Those who were born here remember city council workers used to collect garbage for free, water was always available and trenches were free of debris.

All hell broke loose in the 90s. Moi, big on populism and less on substance, allowed spread of slums in Nairobi. City council basically became a den of corruption. There was a town clerk called Wandera. She made out of Nairobi city council funds like a bandit. There were others of course.

Jerusalem (where Raila was born) Jericho, Kaloleni, Shauri Moyo, Bahati, Makongeni, Mbotela, Maringo, Makadara, Pumwani housing estates were to be demolished and replaced with high rise apartments.
If Joe Aketch had achieved his vision there would not be shortage of apartments. I haven’t heard about him for a long time. The landlords charging an arm and a leg for rent would not find a market.
