Who was this Bob Collymore

I mean, given the type of coverage his death has been given. Not even Wamalwa [vp who died in office] or Jommo Kenyatta [president who died in office] were given such coverage upon their demise. Not that I am hating, but I am just wondering what else he was, besides Safaricon CEO to warrant such coverage.
The daily actually had a pullout on Bob Collymore (and I can’t help wondering how fast the 12? page content was prepared). In the front page of Daily Nation [coast edition], they went further to include a statement "bla bla bla, ‘but he was not a god’. And I had to start wondering just where/how the question of him being a ‘god’ arose!
Of course, kenyan mainstream media have become very dependant on safcom’s ad revenue, and this could be the explanation – or there is something more? Otherwise RIP.

like what?

He was a billionaire that’s why, peasant akikufa hata mca hawezi fika kwa mazishi yake

Not about bob, but there are these individuals naskianga being referred to as ‘wakuu wa anga’ and they are very important.

The ruling admin can answer this better …

of course, there is the matter of safaricom’s servers being useful in elections… once you help fellas get to power/retain power, they owe you a lot (hence why also matiang’ becomes a super-minister).

Hehehe.
Senile Peasant Fossil.

He was an influential person, not known to the common, but within his social setting, he was.
Well that and what @Brikicho Bantureh said.

mnachokozanga mze sana

Do you know how much cash he had given these newspapers (through Safaricom) during his reign for advertising? The coverage is peanuts.

I think if it was Michael Joseph during his tenure, there would not have been such heavy coverage. Collymore was a man of the people. And newspapers know that to sell papers they must put up what appeals to the masses. You can be a president but not be very popular. The man is basically a naturalized Kenyan citizen. He was black. He married a Kenyan. He adopted Kenyan kids. He would mingle with ordinary Kenyans. Let us agree that the man was very popular. That plus being at the helm of the telco with millions of Kenyan subscribers that is pervasive in all areas of Kenyan life.

kaa kando ungojee mchinku makanga wa SGR siku atahaga, katanuka hadi ukuta zitajulishwa.

There you go son!
The pull out was purposely meant for you so that you can increase their sales as you mourn.

Obituaries are prepared months or years in advance for old high profile people, or those with illnesses that can make them log out any time.
Also, Safaricom is the biggest advertiser.

Safaricon is the largest bitter option!

He also owned large shares in these Media Houses so they owe one of their esteemed owners a worthy send off.
Nothing wrong with that and no need to read any sinister in it.
