A guy who owns a wines and spirits shop hapa Nairobi tells me that each evening 6 different types of cops visit his shop and on each visit they pick 50bob. It means he spends 300 bob each day or 9,000 each month or 108,000 bob every year on cops.
Note that the cops visit all wines and spirits shops and pubs in the area every day. I understand kwa pubs they collect 200 Bob meaning apub has to pay over 400,000 Bob each year.
Is this extortion really fair to struggling businesses. I understand that if you refuse to pay you will be in big trouble.
someone said in another thread that some of the money is used in the day to day running of the police stations.
but why shouldn’t the police take some bribes?
is the seller selling legit wines and spirits, has the necessary and valid documents, …
i hope to see another thread about the kanjo, about the civil servants, about the “normal” business owners,…
am sure we will soon come to a conclusion that we all take/give bribes one way or another and we are just hurt when the other takes more than us.
Ata matatus are other victims. Na pickups na lorries. On eastern bypass nowadays wamejiweka on two points, one just before GSU school, the other hukooooo kwa Kenyatta eucalyptus plantation. Impunity…
Because they can get away with it.
If you don’t “cooperate” they can pin 1,001 charges on you and you’ll end up being so inconvinienced, utakuwa unawapigia simu waje kuchukua haki yao ya siku.
Utakuwa funzo kwa wengine wenye kunyeta na “Utumishi”.
I attended a land control board last week after purchasing a small plot of land I intend to construct a water pond. Every buyer hand to part with 1K in the board room and there were hundreds of people who wanted transfers
That is how Kenya is… We can have another thread on this… it runs across all levels of this nation from kindergattens to Universities, from village elder to the presidency… that is why this is a s**thole country!
