Why Does Kenya still use the British Shilling?

Why does Kenya still use the Colonial British Shilling?
Zambia uses the Kwacha, America, The Dollar, France, The Franc. But Kenya, Uganda, Francophone Africa and a lot of African countries still use Shillings and Francs.
Why can’t Kenya change the identity of it’s currency to “Pesa” ?
Even Mexicans use Pesos

Does the British empire still have that much control over us?

i think iyo kichwa yako imejaa @Matapiko tu

Blame it on Kikuyus, like in the other thread :D:D

The British use pounds Mr Matapiko.

Why do you still use English.

Seems like you’re aware that the tribe that had the largest number of homeguards would be capable of such a thing.
I didn’t mention any tribe but like I said in the other thread, if the shoe fits, PUT IT ON YOUR JIGGER FOOT!

South Africa uses the rand…Why are you still using English?

The British used shillings from the middle ages to I think mid 90s ( when we got our “independence”)

Because I had to learn it to go to school. It was and still is mandatory. Because Kenya officially recognizes it as a “Official Language”. I speak kiswahili too
Are you daft or are you just posting daft comments?

… and freedom fighters, let’s not leave that one out.

And BTW, some tribes collaborated without resistance. The white man targeted GEMA disproportionately because it was the most hostile group to colonial rule. HISTORY

Swahili isn’t your mother tonge neitherm just saying.

And English isn’t British, it predates Britain… by about 500 years give or take

Shilling is from the Anglo-Saxon ‘scillingas’ with evidence that it may alternatively be an early borrowing of phoenician ‘shekel’ (sə’kel) meaning ‘weigh’ and ‘coin’. Dont blame the cornish pastry eaters for giving us the shilingi moja

Swahili is the most widely spoken language in East Africa and is an African language.

The English we speak in Kenya isn’t British English?
Do Ktalk users just love arguing for the sake of arguing?

This is a very genuine question.
If you had paid attention in business class in secondary school you would have learnt that one of the properties of money is that it should be widely accepted by the public as a means of paying debt.
The public has accepted kenya shilling as a currency and until they accept another one then we are stuck with the shilling.

Fun fact
Most probably story was told kwa base ya jaba.

Story goes that some shrewd Kenyan business men dealing in gold wanted to acquire some real gold from Congo. They didnt have the dollars to purchase the gold. So wao na ujanja yao they went to wash wash fellows and bought millions of fake dollars. Wakapeleka huko Congo interior to buy their gold. Kufika huko they paid for the gold with the fake dollars. The congolese seller akachomoa machine ya ku-inspect if the dollars are real. Suprisingly they were all fakes. Wakenya wakajua hapa ni kifo tu ndio next.

Surprisingly the congo businessman just smiled and congratulated them for doing business despite the fake dollars.
Jamaa akawaambia that in that part of the country is almost impossible to get the local currency. Also that the local currency available is so old and tattered that businessmen dont accept it. Instead they accept new currency especially dollars. So he will just introduce the fake dollars into the local economy and he will be able to acquire goods and services locally (including more minerals for sale).

Majamaa wakarudi kenya wamejaza real gold kwa debe.

I’m convinced people here just love arguing.
The “Shilling” was introduced to Kenya by the British. Period. You can post all the anglo saxon you want but you won’t change facts. They used it here first. Made it the currency here and gave it it’s name.

When exactly did the public accept it?
For you to accept, you must give consent. When did the Kenyan public consent as a unit to use it?
Because I know we consented to our system of government, our laws, even our constitution was done by consent.
Just because it’s what was imposed on us and normalized to the point where it was acceptable, doesn’t mean we consented.

Seems like you’re the one who didn’t pay attention in both business, history and English class

Etymology matters mate

So English belongs to the British because it’s called British English?

Aki?

So Canadian English and Australian English belong to the Canadians and Australians?

English predates the British Empire.

British English doesn’t mean English belongs to the Brits. Same way you can’t say Swahili is African when it is literally a merger of African Bantu with Arabic…

So Swahili is also foreign.

People are trying to show you that nothing is static!! Even those who you claim to be originators borrowed the systems from others. What is happening here isn’t new, even writing derives from the Romans who introduced it to Britain via conquest.

The very alphabet we use to write our languages is foreign, think about that

Absolutely correct because Senior Chief Waruhiu wa Kung’u, Mbiyu Koinange, Josiah Njonjo, and Philip Karanja… et al belonged to some tribe outside GEMA, ama namna gani?

The Nandi were the MOST hostile to the white settlers, you GEMA jingoist.

Wach u waganis na makasiriko za ufala.

Listen to Musa Juma’s Rapar Owino - especially how he segways off at 2.45. Absolute genius!!
