Was I right or wrong? I used to live with a chic from TZ years ago called Fatuma. V gracious, tall, elegant lady.

Thats why you learn’t Swahili from her. Alright?

We do learn Swahili in our Kenyan Schools though, believe it or not. Just that we speak it differently depending on where one comes from. Our Coasterians speak your swahili sanifu. Those in Nairobi and its environs speak sheng, mixture of English/Swahili. Folk like my Mum speak Kikuyu/Swahili…hata usitake kusikia. If I feel like hiding under the bed when she is at it, mmmmm wonder what you guys would say…she starts off by telling the workman…‘ukatakate hiyo thaara(nappier grass) tudogotudogo (small small) arafu uende mugunda (shamba) urete hiyo mandizi na hiyo muramba (banana plant) tena ukate umpatie hawa ng’ombe’ (plural/singular??)sigh!

But yes 5 of us were sharing a house. 3 Kenyans, 2 from DRC and Fatma so we spoke a lot of Swa. I also happen to have a great interest in languages.

Watajifunza tu:D
