Airbus vs. Boeing

Scary idea! Computers will never handle this:

Once Tesla builds a completely autonomous vehicle that can drive itself, airplanes will not be far off. Computers can do anything with enough data and hardware.

Whenever computers encounter a totally new situation that has not been fed into their learning memory, they demand human intervention and guidance. The time for such intervention (reprogramming) is not during a landing in 50 knot crosswinds.

Very soon they’ll be able to feed themselves data and reprogram themselves so suit a certain goal. Actually they already do this with computer playing games like go and chess where they have invented completely new strategy moves to defeat their human players.

boeing’s track record is anything to go by
hence emirates monopoly on them

But already the bulk journey of any flight is on auto pilot

Auto pilot doesn’t cover landings and take offs. Plus the pilot has to take over when an engine fails.

All machines have to be monitored by a human whether remotely or on the same physical location.

No they don’t, and soon, they won’t have to.

There is no comparison between computer behaviour in gaming and human beings responding to dangerous situations in real time. Pilots are not programmers. In an emergency, a pilot is driven by a combination of adrenaline, emotion, fear and a sense of duty to save lives. The situation cannot be pre-programmed since it is always unique and changing.

What a computer will never learn:

Bloomberg also commended the pilot for not leaving the plane until he had checked to make sure everyone had been been evacuated.

“It would appear that the pilot did a masterful job of landing the plane in the river and then making sure that everybody got out,” Bloomberg said.

“I had a long conversation with the pilot,” Bloomberg said. “He walked the plane twice after everybody else was off, and tried to verify that there was nobody else on board, and assures us there were not.”

Auto pilot is like cruise control in a good car: it takes over the easy parts but must be overridden when unusual circumstances present themselves.

What do you mean there’s no comparison. Kwani flight simulation ni nini, si it’s a game? Albeit a poor comparison to real life. If humans can be trained with flight simulators then machines can do much better because they have real time access to all the data of all the planes that have ever flown in the history of man. And they can process that data faster and come up with newer and more unique strategies that no man has ever come up with regardless of how fast the situation changes.

Sometimes dealing with an emergency does not require that you recall 10 million past emergencies. You need to make decisions nobody has ever had to make before.

Gari manual ama auto? Autocars are more like wheelchairs, mwanamme ni manual

Automation has caused a lot of conflict with pilots.
I am always watching aircraft investigations and most pilots always work against the automation sometimes because they were never trained or lack of experience.
