Engineers na architectures wa Kenya

Kenya iko na more than qualified engineers and architect ,case in point American embassy hapa Kenya was designed by a Kenyan , and it’s one of the most secure buildings on Earth ,shida ya Kenya Ni ma tender boys Kama one jiggy

LACK OF GOVERNMENT FUNDING!!!

Hi siyo ya movie? Impressive designs. But I know many Kenyans doing such in other countries it’s just a myth that we lack people who can do the same. Even in this forum I just realized there people with enormous engineering skills and talent just like the said white man.

Zii,jamaa ni architectures…nikii mani? Unamnyima ham yake

Perhaps a secondment process is put in place, they get assigned to work within experienced teams overseeing complex government supported projects, to gain certain skills and gain experience.

Hii ndio kazi ya internship. However, internships pay poorly and you are really never guaranteed a job. Even more, to have experience as an engineer in Kenya, you have to have a professional/consulting certification from ebk. Then you can start your own firm and bag govt tenders. That is almost impossible to achieve since these certifications are already held by a select few who enjoy working with the govt. Lazima ujuane na pia lazima you work under a professional engineer who are few and far in between for 3 or more years.

We have to do some high tech African villages first, engaging students/ and perhaps one or 2 consultants. The rest will follow easily and the cost will be low.

They do this in Europe; they have schemes where plot owners are recruited through universities and colleges, especially where there in innovative idea. The colleges facilitate the builds; some private building companies are integrated into the learning institutions and bring experience and advice into the building projects.

Students finish colleges with good experience, get placement in high-tech building companies. Usually if your plot/house idea is selected as a teaching project the cost is significantly low. The students are engaged in most parts of the build and also do different projects to broaden the skills they acquire.

That is why I said we need a "secondment process" not Internship.

Secondment: the process or state of being seconded, the temporary transfer of a person from their normal duty to another assignment for the purpose of gaining skills and experience.

As a structural engineer your main objective is to safely and economically carry all loads/stresses to the ground. Any other thing ni show off.

How will that occur if there are no professional engineers to train the other graduates. In Kenya the total number of engineers registered by ebk is less than 10k and most of them are inexperienced graduates. I can actually bet that the professional and consulting engineers number less than 2k or 1k.

Every company which is allocated a complex government project has a quarter of secondment staff assigned to it. This becomes a standard for all government or public purse supported projects.

Also initialy linking up some of the private external companies doing many gov. projects to the main university and colleges. Indeed many companies in Europe compete for such partnserships because some of the pioneering technologies come as proposals via colleges and the first phase of implementation is attemped through colleges with very little cost on them.

Very few companies do this. Actually the only institution that does this successfully is the department of public works and a few other parastatals/regulating bodies and work is usually seasonal. Very few private companies if any produce enough experienced engineers. Most of the big projects go to foreigners who subcontract to Kenyan firms which are owned by a few consulting engineers who make a killing.

The process is rigged. What we need is more direct tendering to more Kenyan firms, which will create more work and more employment.

Every company tendering will know that there will be secondments to the project. The subcontracted firms owned by the few consulting engineers will take on those seconded. By year 5, the game will begin to change and more innovative and bolders ideas will be seen even at local villages.

As at May 2018. The numbers have since gone higher.
