I think they did. about 6 times. one mission partially failed and they turned back at moon’s orbit. the moon is a desolate piece of rock with same type of minerals as found on earth. nothing to see there and certainly not worth the money.

   On the day Apollo went to space, African Americans were protesting as to why people were going to the Moon when half the community was in poverty.
   However, because both Kennedy and Johnson were popular, the opposition to the Space program was not a political threat.
   Not so for Nixon. Who was the one who ended the missions as a cost saving mmeasure.
   Democrats since then have opposed Space programs that require people, usually reversing any progress made by Republicans.
   Carter wanted the focus on Earth’s orbit.
   Reagan wanted the moon but after the 1986 Challenger accident, even earth orbit was a tough sell.
   George Bush Snr actually laid a solid foundation for a moon then Mars program only for Clinton to tear it down back to Earth orbit.
   Bush Jnr wanted to go to Mars. The Senate actually had a meeting with top scientists to make it happen, they balked at the $400 billion cost.
   However in Bush 's second term, the plan was modified in such a way NASA would spend around $50 billion a year, a plan that was endorsed by Bush. But America entered into a recession…
   Obama focused on sending rovers to Mars and telescopes outside Earth to explore the Cosmos. The former has been very successful.
   The latter started well, until James Webb that is.
   But Obama opposed manned missions. Things like the Orion capsule were largely forced on him by a Republican majority congress.
   Trump does seem to want to go to both. He cannot make up if it is the moon then Mars or is it Mars direct.
   So yes, it was very easy
   Because it happened during a popular president and at a time when voices like those of African Americans (only 8% of the population then) were muted.
   They cannot just go to Mars or the moon today without some controversy.
   NASA is also a real bureaucracy,James Webb was a telescope meant to be launched in 2012. We should be doing a third generation of telescopes like Lourvuor. Instead, TESS was launched Last year and James Webb delayed to 2020.
   If launching Telescopes is bringing so much bureaucracy and escalating costs, What of manned missions??

Would you compare the space walks of both the moon landing and the space station, are there any similarities or are there glaring differences ? Just try think this through.
