You only become rich if your entrepreneual. Many people are not cut out for the life of an entrepreneur. The only other way is going up the corporate ladder which requires way more skill sets than just being smart.
Discovering AIDs or Cancer medications requires you to be working in Big Pharma. And be given the opportunity to do so. Most likely you will be just part of a team that makes that invention because of the sophistication and amount of work required. And you are an employee so the company takes credit for all your work.
Inventions are only significant if they have commercial value. So its largely hit or miss.
Being smart is good but not a guarantee to anything.

But he died broke yet even the fact that we are posting on this forum is due largely to him.

This is the gist of the argumenmt. IQ does not equate financial wealth. Edison and Tesla were both brilliant men. But, does it mean Edison was more of a genius then Tesla simply because his overriding goal was profit?

Likewise, people like Lenin wanted to change whole societies. Was he less of a genius for pursuing this rather than profit?
