Impact of SGR on Nairobi-Mombasa Transport sector

You are right. It’s a similar situation to Kenya mpya buses vs Thika nissans. The difference in fare is only thirty bob but the effect is four Kenya mpya buses leaving for Thika before one Nissan can fill up.

You are all forgetting there’s another less discerning class of bus customers, the ones who pay the likes of Chania 800/= and then spend hours before the bus fills up, then endure stops at every small town along the way spending almost 15 hours on the bus.
That’s a class that doesn’t need to be prompted to shift to the SGR.

I think the SGR has enough capacity to mop up all the demand on that route. One train is equivalent to how many buses?

Hakuna mahali basi zinaenda. Hii SGR ni hype tu, in a year they will be struggling to keep up those numbers.

Cargo will do well, but passengers, wasikuwe comfortable sana.

  1. Nitoke kayole nianze kungangana kuenda syokimau alafu nishukishwe miritini, forget!!
  2. The 5 hours can be done, but on an EXPRESS TRAIN!! with all those stop overs to enable track changes, new passengers and toilet breaks, assuming each takes 20 mins, hapo 3 hours are gone. so basically it will take the same time with a bus that makes one stop over.
  3. Shukisha huyu mtoto/clande/gunia ya mahindi hapo stage inaitwa kosovo. zinangojewa!! Modern coast 5- SGR 0
  4. acha nikule hizi samosa kwanza.

County train and intercity train. Be conversant with that

Express train will be stopping at MtitoAndei in addition to Nbi and Msa. Intercounty train will be stopping at each station. We may assume most passengers will be plying Nbi-Msa route direct. Someone going to Voi from Nbi, the quickest route is to take the express from Nbi to Mtito Andei then switch over to the IC train upto Voi (will there be an additional charge for switching between express and IC trains going in the same direction??) . Also assume most passengers on the train will be either sightseers in no big hurry or people traveling short distances eg. Athi River to Mariakani, Voi to Msa, MtitoAndei to Voi etc…

Just like today, if two trains leave each station at the same time, naona most of the passengers for buses watakua wamechotwa

Nashangaa pia.

No peasant will pay fare to miritini, pay fare for train, pay fare from syokimau to town.
Mimi hupandia Channia hapo saba saba 600 to Nairobi every Friday Mimi hapana tambua mchina

@M2Random your avata was enaf to anser @Okiya

Train ni safer and easier to predict time,do you think the gava is dumb as to build a railway na hio issue ya kwenda syokimau etc haizawekwa kwa hesabu? This will be sorted soon, maybe by shuttle buses or the old train.

Postal Corporation already iko mpangoni to provide the last mile shuttle bus both in Nairobi and Mombasa. The pilot project is being charged at a KSh 100. But like every one else, they are waiting for a more concrete schedule before deciding whether they will go into it full time…

From your comment its quite clear you are not a regular bus traveller on that route. 1200 is a stretch on normal days a bus 2 by 2 sitting arrangent and reclining seats its just 1k. Chania has some 3 by 2 which do not recline hencd can charge below 1k and still be profitable.
