After watching the videos , I believe apple were caught off guard by Samsung, so they put something together real quick, called it iPhone x.

Not entirely, the fact that you have to get extra gear just to use VR is a notable limitation. People are getting lazier with gadgets, just look at the buzz about voice activated assistants plus the low intake of 3D TVs/technology. AR offers a lot of convenience even without considering the costs.
