If the place has the potentiality of fast growth,you can also consider maybe putting a slab, you take the plan of rentals. You build like two houses ,you finish one that you will be staying with your family.With this plan, you develop at your own pace.
Maybe later, as the dust settle as you have said , you can buy another small plot and finally settle your family

Things have been tough and I have decided enough is enough. landlord amenizoea. I have a small piece(quarter of an acre) in Kitengela which am considering putting up a simple two/Three bedroom for the family(me wife and daughter 4 years). am looking at a simple house simple finish actually just wall plaster, ceiling either wood or gypsum tutaweka tukiwa ndani. septic am told biodigester is cheaper and better.

Note: The area has all amenities, schools and churches, hata a police post. people have build serious homes. and to add selling part of the plot is a no. Will construct a bigger one in a few years when the dust settles. Anyone with similar experience, whats your take, from experience how much can it cost if properly managed. and is this a good idea.
