Mungiki series of oaths:
A police officer conversant with the group, and who cannot be named because of force discipline, said Mungiki
maintains control over its followers through a series of oaths, starting with the oath of initiation, called kuhagira.
There is an oath for repentance, called horohio; to prepare for combat, mbitika; continuous oath called exodus, which, the officer said, signifies that the sect is nearing Canaan, or victory.
An interesting oath called valentine, is administered on couples to protect them from HIV and strengthen their marriage, said the officer.
The oath was introduced after the Mungiki leadership claimed that the government had sent 2,000 HIV-positive women to entrap Mungiki members and use the virus to wipe them out.
Members pay for all oaths, said the policeman. For the Valentine oath, couples pay Sh2,000. The oath is administered on men wearing a new pair of boxers and the women in plain panties — all bought from relatives of
Mungiki leaders, said the officer.
The reason police consider
Mungiki such a danger, apart from their demonstrated ruthlessness, is its organisational structure, which divides the sect’s leadership into five units. The units are relatively efficient, the police source revealed.
There is an operational unit — the spiritual enforcers who fan the mysticism and cultural romanticism that glue members together. The unit announces declarations of oaths, distributes the oathing paraphernalia and collects money from cells to implement the spiritual leader’s projects.
The defence unit is the army and has bases in Nyandarua district; Umoja, Dandora and Ngara in Nairobi; and Kitengela. It has arms used in robberies and executions.
According to the officer, there is also a public relations unit, which issues statements; and a foreign relations unit. There is a coordination unit, the administration wing of the sect.
The sect is organised on the basis of units called matura, or village units. A committee is in charge of each itura (singular) and carries out all sect functions, including oathing and recruiting. There are currently an estimated 2,000 such units, said the officer…
