NYS Buses

But the government aint serious though i fully support this NYS bus thing .They will hike fuel prices at the same time introduce buses to fully kill the competion .Watu watapata mboga wapi .

This is very revealing, how many Kenyans know that this is how they expose themselves to the risk of death each time they board these death traps?

The crash tests are done at speeds under 50 kph and even then, fatalities were almost certain in some cases.

Accidents in Kenya happen at double the speed or higher (when you consider a head crash 80 kph + 80 kph, throw in the extra momentum from overloading). It does not take rocket science to see why matatu crashes are almost guaranteed to result in fatality.

Would this video have changed Uhuru’s mind? Perhaps, but the cartels would have forced his hand politically, in Kenya, a “token” number of lives are acceptable collateral damage in the quest for profits as long as none of the collateral damage affects the elite and their relatives.

But you also forget that it was the president who stood somewhere in 2013 right after being elected and shredded the Michuki rules with the declaration, “Wacha hawa vijana wajibambe na waweke picha na muziki…” or something to that effect.

Coming from a business background maybe the president’s statement back then was a poisoned chalice meant to lead to the demise of matatus followed by this new arrangement… Or maybe not.

wanalipisha 20 bob pekee. Kitambo sana hapo 1990…1991 NYS had a similar program. Zilikuwa especially along Thika road. Hazikuwa mingi initially. And I don’t remember them being called Nyayo bus. Zilikuwa same green colour had a prominent logo at the front written DAF.

Watu wengi walikuwa wanaziita basi ya DAF… but then again in those days due to how many people felt about Nyayo and his leadership, maybe waliona afadhali waziite DAF kuliko Nyayo. And boy were they popular!! Na zilikuwa operated by Geoffrey Griffin wa starehe.

In those days matatu ilikuwa mang’aa kabisa wacha hata leo. Mnajazwa kama gunia, wanakataa kusimama stage, na ilikuwa na makanga kama watatu kwa mlango with legs flying in the wind from Ruiru to Nairobi. Na ukileta shida hata ungetupwa nje mid journey.
Na mlango haifungwi mnakunywa wind vizuri.

When a green DAF bus came into view from a distance… watu walikuwa wanaingia kwa barabara once they see that green colour kuenda kuipanda due to their professionalism and cost. Don’t know why it collapsed. Moi used to come up with good ideas then they collapse. I heard that at the time he was trying to kill the mainly kiuk opposition owned private matatu business.

According to this article the last green DAF bus on Kenyan roads was last seen in 1995. DAF still makes buses sijui kama ni hizo nys wanatumia leo. And they were very well built and spacious.

Theft and mismanagement in the NYS didn’t start with Waiguru.
Lots of people became fabulously wealthy stealing from the Nyayo buses.

Zilizopendwa. Na sikumbuki kama hata zilikuwa ba seat belt. Nao hao wezi si ndio wengine they drop dead in bars like that M.P. Hawakuenda far.

That kind of mentality is what has kept us backwards.
Stop being naive.

Nairobi was by then still neat and clean before we lost the way.

Back then Nairobi looked really nice

Yes it was definitely a lot cleaner and less chaotic. Kwanza wale waliishi Nairobi in late 50s, 60s and 70s waliishi more or less in Paris in Africa. Lawns and flowers everywhere, well painted buildings and spotless streets.

When this mzungu took photos in the very early 90s he stood in the more palatable city center. Huko r.road kulikuwa kumeanza kupata uchafu. Pipa zile kubwa za green went untouched for weeks, kunanuka street mzima. Na kulikuwa na chokoraa or rather chokora mapipa their full title but not many like today. Kwanza kulikuwa na habit ya watu kutoa nguo na kujifanya wenda wazimu and walk from shop to shop harassing women and Indian shopkeepers. Sijui kama ilikuwa begging or thieving strategy. But then again, Nairobi has always attracted weird elements.

Na in old photos it appears as if watu hawakuwa na ma utambi sana. People were lean from all the walking and working and less junk food.

I don’t get you ! It’s the largest employer an creates businesses, advertising tenders left right . Through cooperation it is engaged in soooo many businesses .

When it is an essential service, the government should not leave it even for a minute in the hands of cartels, I would have an issue with the government participating if all one required to run a matatu was a license from NTSA.

In the 90s, how could they not have been called Nyayo Bus when everything public was called Nyayo? In actual fact Nyayo buses started operating in late 80s @Meria Mata can confirm this.

Uhuru relaunched Matatu thug industry in 2013 immediately after his election. He even took a ride for PR stunt from statehouse!

He is therefore an accomplice.

Willing matatu, willing passenger.
Kwani wewe pia huwa wa Rongai?

There are also private schools vs government schools, private hospitals vs government hospitals etc and government facilities charge less and nobody complains

NYS standing at the door when the buses were first introduced ili watu wasishuke vile wamezoea kwa matatu. This is 1987. They made passengers to form queues before boarding.

Uzuri ya wazungu ni kufikiria mambo ya kuweka history. I’ve even seen old home videos from the 1960s and 70s Nairobi in very pristine condition. Na akina KBC hawana…
If you take street scene photos with your phone just store them well.

The volvo LSHSSSSSS…SSSS. The Volvos were built up by three local body builders (Labh Sing Harnam Sing, Choda Fabricators and Harnam Sing Bansal) but all to the same design, making it difficult to distinguish one form the other. Fortunately most buses had builder’s plates! Also, the LSHS buses have different side windows with a larger non-opening upper part.
