The excuse of marginalization and ignorance cannot justify these acts of savagery. I think there is also the hidden issue of the border between West Pokot and Turkana counties that has become a political conflict between these two tribes. The rustling is used to cover up a serious tussle for natural resources by politicians in both counties who use their people as pawns in a chess game.

Politicians preach peace during the day and incite and arm youths and incite them at night…

But you also have to admit cattle rustling is now a commercial/political venture just like poaching and it involves complex networks at different levels. So, cultural primitiveness is just used as a cover for criminal activities.

but a people must be ready to embrace a chance for the alternative lifestyle. we have not seen their leaders in giving more than lip service to the need for them to take up education…

True. Except, Karamojongs are Ugandans while Toposas are Ethiopians. But, they have close ancestral ties with the Turkanas.

Education can help. Politicians would not easily incite their electorate to go fight, steal herds of cattle and kill people if the electorate was educated. The government also has a role to play-education, proper resource allocation, laying proper infrastructure and so forth.

Reminds me of a young fellow who was recently employed there as a nutritionist. He gets to the interior and finds people there have no idea what it means to wear clothes and go about their day-to-day lives practically (half-) naked. Culture shock pap!! Last I heard, he was looking for a transfer out of there.

If only people stood up for them and demanded for all these things to be provided there. If we rejected politicians filthy antics and went ahead to help over there…changing the mindset of those folks, that’s the challenge.

The Turkana raid samburu, samburu raid the Merille…the merille raid the Murle…the Murle attack the Pokot…the Pokot and their cousins the Karamoja raid everyone else…it’s a vicious cycle that’s been there since mankind…it’s only grown in scale with the emergence of automatic guns which all the communities have in abudance that’s why the killing is so widespread…it’s easy to kill with a gun than with an arrow or spear…we always like to blame the MP’s for the lack of development…but remember the main responsibility of MP is to represent you in parliament…the Government is responsible for Development…that’s why they came up with CDF…but what can 20million ksh per year do in a constituency as large as Laisamis…thats why there was a clamour for devolution…places like mandera finally got a tarmack road in the town center 50 years… after independence…so lay the blame squarely on the central government…from kenyatta’s 14 years…Moi’s 24 years and Kibakis 10 years…and of course the colonialists

They can be awakened first of all. How did the other communities adopt a new lifestyle? Then education, with the government paying full attention to curtail crazy politicians from derailing change. However it’s a gradual process this one.
