Murang’a, before Boyes and Francis Hall became the first Whites there, was ruled by Chieflings whose spheres were as large as today’s constituency.

Karuri ruled what we’d call Kangema + Mathioya + North Kiharu formerly known as Mbiri.

Wang’ombe ruled what is today’s Othaya. Othaya neighbours Kangema/Mathioya.

Wang’ombe wa Ihura and Karuri wa Gakure were perennial turf enemies each with a warrior infantry that raided each other’s turf for undisputed leadership.

Karuri operated from Tuthu, 6500ft Amsl and 40 Km from to day’s Murang’a town which is about 4500ft Amsl. He could see his “empire” from such perch.

During one such war between Karuri’s and Wang’ombe warriors, Boyes happened. He took sides and armed with a gun the mercenary could have tipped the scales either way.

Karuri moved fast. He sent out a message to Francis Hall at Fort Smith, Kikuyu and invited him to his Empire. Hall obliged, arrested Boyes charging him with “impersonating Government”.

Fort Hall was built and Karuri wa Gakure installed as the de jure CHIEF of his former empire. He was to report for briefings periodically from Tuthu to Fort Hall, a 40 KM journey.

He then invited the Roman Catholic CONSOLATA MISSION to Tuthu to strategies modern education. Wang’ombe was aced out!

Walking with his troupe to Fort Hall, Karuri had to break his journey halfway at a place called KOIMBI or WEITHAGA near KAHUHIA GIRLS. Again on his way back, he’d break his journey for a night or two. During these stops, he’d give his BARAZA orders to his subjects. These included such as granaries design, hygiene, anti-FGM, burying of the dead, pit latrines and trenching of gradient farmlands.

The home he stooped at was owned by a great wealthy man called MAKERI.

Makeri was approached to deputize Karuri but he declined. A deal was struck. His first wife, Wangu, a charismatic queenly woman, would be made a proxy SUB CHIEF so that Makeri’s homestead would become the HOUSE OF POWER. Known as NGATHA, as first wives or women of substance are known in native Kikuyuland, Wangu took up her commission with gusto to the chagrin of many men who however knew that they owed Makeri many favours.

Wangu was a sub-Chief for about 5 to 7 years.

About the same time in Kilifi, Me Katilili was raising hell. Wangu and Me Katilili were contemporaries.

Did Wangu have a fling with Wang’ombe? If she did, Karuri would have had her sacked pronto. But if Wang’ombe was equally made a Chief like Karuri, then Wang’ombe and Wangu would have become colonial workmates under Hall. Anything goes.
