apple had kiosk mentality,but see where they are now.Remember mottorola was the major communication company,followed by black berry after mobile phone useage explosion?The rest of the companies were either into radio or TV. it’s all about diversification and proper market research,uza makondofia next to a githeri man ama ugali tayari next to fiss mongers…work smart not hard.

He’s right but hypocritical because under his tenure, Safaricom imenyang’anya biashara mingi nyama kwa mdomo. Eg cctv, various online platforms plus zile za nyuma zenye hufail that not many people know of.

Safaricom itself has benefited immensely from kiosk mentality through Mpesa shops.

Bob himself has been implicated in corruption scandals.

Kenyas businesses problems are more than just ‘kiosk mentality’ issues. And the kiosk mentality is what almost AAAAALLLL major European and American companies do, they simply add small twist then hide behind patents.

Pivoting is not cloning an existing business model. Apple pivoted. They didn’t start another Motorola. They made a better phone product. That’s a pivot. Similarly, in this case as Bob has put forth, I’d say there’s still space for malls in this country. But in different contexts and different price points.

Kiosk mentality is the reason why most startups barely stay afloat to even breakeven, most are in financial distress for their entire life which is mostly less than 3 years, Abraham Lincoln’s wise words have fallen on deaf years.

As for me i have committed myself to conduct thorough research which is not an easy task, i have been unable to keep within the timelines but the information i have gleaned from sources in the industry are worth the delay. When i finally take the plunge sometime in November I will be ready for most of the nasty suprises that have brought down other players.

I’d say there’s still space for malls in this country

fair enough,but malls wouldn’t work,‘exhibition halls’ as they’ve been known for years,might.Big affluent malls are for the high end spenders and everyone knows how the patrons of such have a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience about locals,their beef is that they(locals) either they crowd up space with their window shopping or mischief.kiosk mentality is here to stay

If I was able to loot a billion, I’d build the biggest and best cancer hospital in the region and charge half what Indians charge.

That way instead of a Congolese/Ugandan/Bongolala/Kenyan flying to India they would come and give me their money.
