The reason why Arabs were not able to penetrate the interior of the land that is today known as Kenya is because the Maasai warriors were a very formidable barrier. Then after the Maasai the Arabs and their enablers would have had to go past the Kikuyu and then the Nandi, Samburu and Kipsigis. No way would they have have so much luck.

If you owed someone, and couldn’t pay him, you could go work for them until the debt is recovered.
If you lost a war, chances were you’d be captured and kept as a slave.
Fast forward to modern day slavery, where people aren’t captured but willingly go get enslaved.
In some cases people even pay to go get enslaved.
