Impact of SGR on Nairobi-Mombasa Transport sector

SGR Figures

  • Ksh 700 for economy class to Mombasa
  • 5 hours max to Mombasa
    Bus Figures
  • Above Ksh 1200
  • 7-8 hours
Currently, the bus companies may continue making money, but if the government gets higher capacity trains, or more trains for different times, they will feel the impact. Most people will have two choices either booking flights (mostly businesspeople and the rich), or the train, for peasants.

Buses bado ziko kwa biz. lakini mafuta top layer in profits imekuwa trimmed

Buses are introducing mombasa to upcountry routes ef. Msa-kitale, msa-malaba etc. Thats how they will survive. Plus reduction of trucks on the highway will make roads relatively safer

Naona zitakuwa dented sana…peasants hawawezi lipa 1200 instead of 700…hiyo punch ni pesa mob sana. I see a situation where the train will always run on full capacity.

I think buses will still retain their market share because of ease of availability and most travellers on the Nbi Msa route prefer night travel so that they can get to their destination early morning.

Hizo trains ziwekwe Omata. It is unfair for buses speed limited to 79kph to compete with this Chinese behemoth that happily glides along at 120kph.

The only reason I think buses will survive is because there will not be enough trains to serve the market…that is the ONLY reason I can think of.

Is it 700 or 900?
What is the frequency?

Was 900…reduced to 700

Peasants ride with chania and the like for as low as 500 to 800 bob

I know of several bus companies that have been operating these routes for sometime. Mombasa - Busia/Kisumu/Kampala

But of late most mombasa-nrb buses are joining those routes in number. Kama modern coast, dreamline, mash. They are introducing upcountry destinations kwa wingi hata migori, homabay, kapenguria, meru

krc wamesema hizo rates zitakua reviewed watu wakianza kutumia trains regularly

Umemgonga ndipo, Modern bus is competing with akina Kawera in Kisumo City and Busia

Yaani watu wameanza kuziita behemoth after matusi ile niliona hapa?

Upcountry Bus stage should now get out of cbd and camp near soh-kim- auh(syokimauh). Done with proper planning and enough land allocation, we will now have a well organized city.

Believe me unless they review that price buses will be kicked out of business. The train is faster, safer and more comfortable compared to buses. Again you know kenyans with cheap things, women nowdays are scrambling for 90bob maize flour in supermarkets before the stock run out. For sgr it would be good if they let the market dictate the price otherwise they are likely to face a demand they can’t satify.

Hapo sawa…

All of talking of bus companies introducing routes to Kisumu sijui Busia…Do you live in Kenya?

We have done Msa-Kampala na Modern Coast and Mash Bus,Msa-Dar with Tahmeed,Modern…etc for the longest time
You see peasant will still need to go to Kampala. SGR to Champasla is a million miles away n hata haiendi Dar. So bus companies are still in business. I will
not even talk of parcels they carry…

But my bad. I forgot I am among billioneas, they do not know life below 35K feet

Kweli? Those must be scarce exceptions, but it’s good to know that the buses break even at that fare.

As suggested above, the oligopolistic structure and crazy profits that feed reckless driving and poor service levels will be broken. Compe is good! !
