Its not how it works. Most times, detectives actually have to explain the preceding conditions to a Medical Examiner. Otherwise, he cant give with 100% precision the cause of death, in some cases. Eg, what position was the body found, it consistent with scratches on the side of the head, etc.
In this case, there is no narrative to lean towards. They do not know the cause of death. They just have a dead body.

Postmortem should ideally commence at where a body is discovered, position, state etc. I see a DCI very deliberately trying to build a watertight case. The pathologists presence at the scene of crime does not necessarily denote he supports the DCI position.
